I experienced my first short-term mission trip in 1987. Texas Baptists and Australian Baptists had forged a partnership. It was 1986 and my first book on church planting had just been published.[1] At the last minute, a key church planter cancelled his church planting seminars scheduled in Sydney and Melbourne. I received a call from the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ Partnership Missions office on Wednesday asking if I would leave… Read More

Times change. Tools change. I am a product of the 60s, that wild era when the world teetered on the edge; when we reached for the moon and left footprints on its surface; when the United States and Russia stared each other down with poised nuclear weapons across a ninety mile channel of water; a time when we reeled from the assassinations of our leaders: John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin… Read More

I stood to my feet at the BGCT Annual meeting in Amarillo along with hundreds others at the conclusion of Rick Warren’s presentation and explanation of the PEACE plan. The elements of the PEACE plan are on target and in sync with the vision and values of WorldconneX: 1. Promoting Reconciliation 2. Equipping Servant Leaders 3. Assisting the Poor 4. Caring for the Sick 5. Educating the next generation These… Read More

In the 21st century, any church can send their own missionary personnel anywhere in the world. In the 20th century, most churches believed they could not send their own missionaries. Distant lands were too far away and too difficult to reach. So, we trusted others to do it for us and delegated missions sending to boards and agencies. But the world has changed. The 21st century is a connected world that… Read More

When the twin towers collapsed in flames on September 11, 2001, our world changed. The twentieth century illusion of isolation and safety provided by the Atlantic and Pacific vanished. We in America suddenly became aware that every culture and every religion impinged on every other. We could no longer live our lives in an isolated Christian context assuming that distant world religions had little to do with us. The difference between… Read More

In the past, the world was fragmented and seemed large. We studied about foreign lands and listened to adventurous stories told by the few who took the message of Jesus to exotic locations. But the world has changed and the day of staying and listening to someone else’s stories is largely past. Today we go and we live the adventure of our own stories. That’s the focus of this month’s Insider. … Read More

I recently received the following article from Joel Vestal, President of ServLife. Joel is a 30-something global leader and served on our board at WorldconneX. Here is an article worth your time and reflection. I hope it leads to action. Are Americans Needed for God’s Global Mission? An Appeal for Global Justice Practitioners by Joel Vestal What the world needs now, perhaps more than ever, is individuals and communities intent on… Read More

Last night my family viewed the movie, Amazing Grace, the story of William Wilberforce and his successful campaign to end the slave trade in Great Britain. Our family discussion following the movie was interesting. My daughter is majoring in Social Work at Baylor University and had just completed a report on the current conditions of slavery in the world. Most of us who live in relative security, especially in the West,… Read More

Last year I served as interim pastor of the First Baptist Church, Hebron, a church averaging less than 100 in attendance in the shadow of Prestonwood. I believe God gave me this experience to teach me the incredible potential for smaller churches. In this church I found a young woman in her thirties who started a business in Uzbekistan, supported herself and two Uzbek women for three years, discipled them as… Read More
